Sonoma, CA • Flinn Lazier of Vail, CO captured the first ever National Championship for Formula Enterprise 2 race cars at the Sports Car Club of America’s 2018 Runoffs. Lazier, driving for One Formula Racing based in Scales Mound, IL took the lead at the green flag and never looked back, leading all 20 laps (50 miles) and crossed the finish line more than 8 seconds ahead of Liam Snyder from Southlake, TX.
It was Lazier’s and One Formula’s first National Championship. Lazier’s uncle Jacques and grandfather Bob both had won National Championships in the past. His father Buddy Lazier won the 1996 Indy 500.
One Formula Racing team principal Steve Stadel on Lazier’s drive, “Flinn drove an excellent race. He was pacing the field by a half second a lap and driving beautifully. His qualifying lap on Thursday, which put him on the pole, was the fastest lap turned by anyone all week in FE2. We knew he was something special the first time he ran our car in Michigan in July. We’re really proud to have Flinn help us bring a National Championship back to Scales Mound.”
Rhett Barkau of Freeport, IL, also out of the One Formula Racing stable, made a great effort on the third day of qualifying to jump from 7th to 4th for the start of the race. He was battling 6-time National Champion Scott Rettich of Columbus, OH for third when he spun off in a very slick turn 4. “Rhett was charging, trying to get to a podium spot”, said Stadel. “When the sun went down over the hill to the west and put the track in the shade, the grip level went away. That was different from what the drivers had been experiencing earlier in the week. We actually saw grip levels go up and times come down with the shade in testing and qualifying. Unfortunately, Rhett got caught out as did several other drivers in the same corner. Rhett won the Northern Conference Championship this year and has won more FE2 races than anyone else in the country, so we’re all proud of his accomplishments”.
